Over the past 15 years, sex trafficking in Israel has grown tremendously. Most of the women (and less frequently children) are smuggled over the Egyptian border and exploited as modern day slaves. They are sold and resold to pimps and brothel owners who strip them of their passports and force them to “work” under inhuman conditions. Victims of this heinous crime are almost always brutally abused at every stage en route to their destination, often suffering starvation, severe beatings and rape.

To Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Internal Security, Yitzhak Aharonovich:
We call upon you, the Israel Government, to take action against the “slavery of our time in the State of Israel. Far too little has been done to confront sex trafficking and the enslavement of thousands of women brought into the country to endure inhuman suffering.
We are all too well aware that the Jewish people have experienced slavery throughout history, in Egypt, the Gulag and the concentration camps of Shoah. We insist you make every effort to end this modern day captivity in the homeland of the Jewish People. We cannot be perpetrators of the very crimes that our tradition and history abhor.
We insist the Israel Government gives the necessary orders to the police and army to seal Israel’s borders to trafficking; to close the notoriously well advertised brothels and “discrete apartments”; and to prosecute and imprison pimps and traffickers with the full force of Israel’s laws. It is time to eradicate this intolerable injustice.
Israel’s potential is in your hands. Let us be the Light unto the Nations to which we aspire and for which the State was created.
